Directions from the south
From Carlisle travel up the A74 until you come to the turn off for Edinburgh A702. You will pass through one market town - Biggar. About 20 mins after that West Linton and then the very small village of Carlops. As you leave Carlops take a fix on your milometer - the turn off to Newhall is nine tenths of a mile from the 30 mile limit sign on the right hand side of the road. You will come up a hill out of Carlops, once you flatten out onto a straight bit of road after about a half of a mile you will see a turn to Nine Mile Burn on the left, drive for approx half a mile - through a scattering of houses - when you leave the houses behind you will see a right-hand turn to Spittal Farm, take that turn. Ahead you will see three houses, the Coach House is the house on the right and Spittal Cottage is the house in the middle. (If using Sat Nav the postcode is EH26 9NA).
From the north
From Edinburgh take the southbound A702 Biggar/Carlisle road. Once you have passed Hillend Ski Centre, continue on the A702 for a further 8 miles. You will pass though a small village called Silverburn and 3 miles on there is a sign pointing up to right for Nine Mile Burn.
Take the turn to Nine Mile Burn, drive for approx half a mile - through a scattering of houses - when you leave the houses behind you will see a right-hand turn to Spittal Farm, take that turn. Ahead you will see three houses, the Coach House is the house on the right and the Cottage the house in the middle.
Directions to Newhall (Steading, Old Cottage and Bothy)
From Edinburgh take the A702 signposted to Biggar and Carlisle - passing the ski slope on the right hand side. After 8 miles pass the sign to Ninemileburn.
After about ¼ mile you pass a layby and Newhall is immediately next on the left hand side. If you reach Carlops you have gone too far.
From the south turn off the M74 at the sign marked Edinburgh A702. Go through Biggar, West Linton and the village of Carlops. About 1 mile from Carlops look out for wooden fence on the right hand side and entrance marked Newhall is on the right hand side.
Down the drive the cross roads turn left towards garden - Old Cottage is the first cottage on the left and Steading Cottage is reached by going straight past Old
Cottage and turning right behind the big wooden shed, and Steading Cottage is ahead on the right hand side.
West Linton is about 5 miles away which has 2 small stores, Post Office, bank and The Bakehouse Restaurant as well as the Gordon Arms pub.
Penicuik is also about 5 miles and has a Tesco and a variety of shops and a few restaurants. About 8 miles away is a Sainsbury's and a variety of stores.
Carlops has a pub/restaurant called the Allan Ramsay which is about a mile away.
